Political Correctness
Political Correctness is a term used to describe language, ideas, politics, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to racial, cultural or other groups.
Over the years Political correctness has started to change not only the way we speak, but also the way we think with emphasis on "Not hurting anyone's feelings" whether they be different Physically, mentally, racially, gender-wise, or in any other way.

As a result of Political Correctness Freedom of Speech has somewhat diminished and personal opinions edged out. Subsequently "the Individual" loses the ability to express his/her opinions freely and with impact.
“The self-censorship resulting from Political Correctness easily trampled freedom of speech.”
(Agustin Blazquez, 8 April 2002)
Gender-neutral language
Feminists are often proponents of using non-sexist language, using "Ms." to refer to both married and unmarried women, for example, or the ironic use of the term "herstory" instead of "history". Feminists are also often proponents of using gender-inclusive language, such as "humanity" instead of "mankind", or "he or she" in place of "he" where the gender is unknown. This can be seen as a move to change language which has been viewed by some feminists as imbued with sexism.
Eg.
The word "mankind" refers to all "human beings" and was not originally intended to exclude women. The feminist movement however saw it differently and preferred to use the word "humanity"
In General
Political correctness is a means to include all of the world's population as equal. People share the same rights but not the same abilities - so in a way PC is trying to correct the idea that "some people are better than others"

Pro's and Con's of PC
PRO'S -
- It encourages awareness of minority groups and encourages inter-cultural competence
- encourages compassion towards others
- It has brought about various days of awareness for groups of people such as "the hearing impaired" and "The visually impaired" (blind awareness week)
CON'S -
- Limits expression and subsequently the impact of what's being said
- minorities are given "special treatment" and ironically things become unfair for the rest of the population.
- PC is used as a way to gain the moral high ground - an "I'm right, You're wrong" attitude
To sum up:
Political Correctness is said to promote equality and consideration towards people of all groups (including minorities) and cultures within a society. And to provide an indirect term for something so as to detract attention away from it. But by creating elaborate round-about phrases for straight forward words, the politically correct are making a bigger deal out of it than it actually is. In short the Politically Correct are making a big deal about the people that may not actually want or need sympathy in the first place.
PC can be used as a way for people (especially those in power) to take the moral high ground - while limiting opposition.
Political Correctness tends to clutter language, rather than create a happy medium for everyone. Instead of bringing about understanding, which is one of the main ideas behind PC, it seems to do more to further alienate minority groups.

Hey Ben, thanks for your blog eh, otherwise I will never know what political correctness means, lol,but its still a very abstract topic for me tho, I should study English more. so "Political Correctness." is the name originated as something of a joke, literally in a comic strip, and we tend still to think of it as only half-serious is it?? but in fact, it’s very serious. It is the great disease of our century, it can really hurt people by using laguages isnt it?? really have to beware of using languages eh, but I think its really hard to speak a perfect languages tho, Ben please comment on my blog as well, thanks http://newzealandshouldlegalisemarijuana.blogspot.com/
PC didn't originate as a joke, but i just chose to include some humour on my blog, political correctness is actually really serious because it's something that is being used to change the way people speak and think, did you hear about the whole Santa "Ho Ho Ho" thing in Australia? - some people complained because Santa's HO HO HO sounded like hoe as in the american slang for "whore"/"prostitute" . they campaigned to change ho ho ho into "ha ha ha" so that it wouldn't sound offensive!
Hey Ben,
Do you think that it could be seen as an indirect way of mocking someone? Sometimes when I hear politically correct language I feel offended. Also I see that the actual meaning can be lost in the translation to PC lingo.

Hey ben !!
WOW !! haha this is a very interesting topic to do a blog on. like the first person I didnt really know what political correctness meant but now I do.Personally I think everyone is equal and if you have something to say you gotta say it otherwise someone is gonna say if for you right ?? Well that can be one reason of why we dont really need political language on the other hand i actually like the idea of having political correctness because then we wont end up hurting other people well thats if they dont understand it or think of it in a negative way.Personally I like to be nice to all people different shapes and sizes so i dont really get to use pc lingo that much. But otherwise pc language is quite useful and will probably help you stay out of trouble??
I enjoyed reading your blog as I mentioned before It is very interesting.
Hey Ben,
I like how you have used your examples in your blog - feminism and PC is a good toss up. all in all i found your blog quite informative and in good contrast, it just sucks that PC, while it can be good for the majority of society has so many con's that we start not being able to see it and we are getting used to this restrained life.
for example, like the things i enjoyed doing or saying as a child i cant do any more because its not PC, I don't have a choice in this matter and i just have to move forward like a machine and accept what the government tells me that i can and can't say.
Good blog bro,
but in my opinion PC SUCKS!!
I personally think that political correctness is a load of bull, in fact i think its taking away freedom of speech. it could be a ploy to control how we as people speak also so im quite skeptical about it. i mean i heard u couldnt say HO HO HO during Christmas in Australia as it might offend the whores, i dunno but PC sucks bad. the blog was well set out however, but like most i dont agree with PC, its more of a joke to me than anything else
